VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System

Substance Use Disorder Treatment

Substance Use Disorder Treatment Services at VA Eastern Kansas are comprised of three separate yet connected recovery-oriented programs:

Intensive and Aftercare Outpatient Programs – Topeka, KS
Fresh Start Inpatient Program – Topeka, KS
Intensive and Aftercare Outpatient Programs – Leavenworth, KS
Medication Assisted Treatment (buprenorphine/naloxone) for OUD – Leavenworth, KS and Topeka, KS

An Intensive Treatment Program by definition is a minimum of three days per week, three hours per day, and three weeks. The Intensive program in Topeka is 4-6 weeks long and the Intensive Program in Leavenworth is 4 weeks long. Veterans can seek admission to these programs at any time.

Aftercare is group treatment provided following an intensive program either in our facility or another VA facility and is not time limited in either the number of days of treatment or the number of hours per day. Essentially, Aftercare is provided as a means of ongoing supportive treatment and therapy for those seeking look term sobriety and needing a structured facility.

The Fresh Start Inpatient Program is a dual-disorder treatment program that is 4 weeks long and is housed on a secure hospital unit. A multidisciplinary treatment team provides assessment and treatment through team meetings and daily group therapy sessions.

Medication Assisted Treatment for opioid use disorder is available both in outpatient (Mental Health Clinic) and inpatient treatment settings (Fresh Start, Domiciliary).  Buprenorphine/Naloxone or Suboxone as well as other options may help Veterans with withdrawal symptoms and/or cravings.
