VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System
Flu Season 2019
FREE Flu Vaccines for Enrolled Veterans at Eastern Kansas HCS
The best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year. The Centers for Disease Control recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone age 6 months and older, preferably before the end of October each year.
Several Easy Options Are Available
Primary Care, Behavioral Health & Specialty Clinics
Flu vaccines are available during normal hours of operation at all Primary Care, Mental Health and specialty clinics at the Topeka VA Medical Center, Leavenworth VA Medical Center, and all Community Based Outpatient Clinics through March 31, 2020. No appointment is needed. Flu shots are available during scheduled visits and also on a walk-in basis.
Walgreens Retail Pharmacy
All Veterans who are enrolled in VA health care may also receive a free standard dose flu vaccine again this year at any Walgreens location nationwide.
Alternate dose vaccines for persons age 65 or older are free at EKHCS but will be billed to Veterans at Walgreens. Learn more about the VA’s Walgreens Retail Partnership - https://www.va.gov/communitycare/programs/veterans/immunization.asp
Flu Shots at Other Non-VA Locations
If you receive your flu shot at any other non-VA location, please send a SECURE MESSAGE using My Health-E-Vet or CALL 1-800-574-8387, Ext 53348, and leave the information requested so that your VA medical record can be updated.
EKHCS Dosing Recommendations
While no single formulation is preferred and recommendations vary, for the 2019-20 Flu Season, EKHCS is providing the FLUAD vaccine for persons age 65 and older. The Quadrivalent (standard dose) will be available for all other patients. If questions, contact your primary care provider.
