VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System

Non-VA Care

What if I have an emergency?

At some time in your life, you may have an emergency and be advised to go to the nearest emergency room by one of our staff or by and ambulance service. This does not mean that the VA is agreeing to pay for your emergency care.

The VA may not always pay for emergency services or may only pay for part of the care provided, based on when you are determined to be stable. Eligibility requirements for emergency care are separate from routine medical care entitlements. Each claim for care is individually evaluated for eligibility and medical necessity.

If you are an Eastern Kansas patient, claims for emergency care for non-service connected conditions must be filed within 90 days of the date of service. Claims should be mailed to the following address:

VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System
Attn: Fee Basis Office
2200 SW Gage Blvd
Topeka, KS 66622

You may obtain more specific information on non-VA emergency care at the following website:

Can I choose to go to my own doctor and have the VA pay for it?

When a veteran is entitled to VA health care, it is normally for care provided at a VA clinic or hospital. In some cases, the VA cannot provide needed care and may pay for you to receive it in the community. However, you must be referred by a VA provider and the care preauthorized by the VA.

Vendor Information:

The VA is not an insurance provider. Since we are not an insurance provider, we may require information you would not normally provide to an insurance company when filing a claim. We may ask for medical records on most claims filed with us. In addition, there may be other information we need to support the claim. When information is not provided, payments may be delayed or denied depending on the circumstances. When the VA pays a claim, it is considered payment in full. In addition, the VA does not pay behind other insurance providers. For more information on filing claims with us please visit the following website:
