Beneficiary Travel (Including Ambulance)

VA currently reimburses eligible veterans $ .415 per mile for travel to the nearest VA health care facility that can provide their needed care. Veterans traveling for their Compensation and Pension (C&P) exams are also reimbursed $.415 per mile. In most cases, travel benefits are subject to a deductible of $3 each way. A maximum of $18 per month may be deducted.

Who is Eligible for travel?

  1. Veterans whose service-connected disabilities are rated 30 percent or more.
  2. Veterans traveling for treatment of a service connected condition.
  3. Veterans who receive a VA pension.
  4. Veterans traveling for scheduled compensation or pension examinations.
  5. Veterans whose income does not exceed the maximum annual VA pension.
  6. Veterans whose medical condition requires special mode of transportation, if they are unable to defray the cost and travel is pre-authorized. Advance authorization is not required in an emergency if a delay would be hazardous to life or health.
